Abstract

ABSTRACT Industry is an economic activity that processes raw materials, semi-finished goods, or finished products into high-value products. Coconut, as a plantation commodity, holds significant economic potential as it can be consumed directly or utilized as industrial raw material. Its relatively short and periodic harvesting cycle results in an abundant supply of coconut coir. The availability and affordability of coir is utilized by the residents of Mlokorejo Village to produce household crafts that are economically valuable and have higher market value. This study aims to analyze the business potential of coconut coir processing in Mlokorejo Village, Puger Sub-district, Jember Regency, focusing on its role in improving the welfare of artisan families. A qualitative approach was employed trough observation, interviews, and documentation of eight coconut coir artisans selected using purposive and snowball sampling methods. The collected data were analyzed and visualized using NVivo 12 Pro software. The findings of this study is indicate that although this business provides an alternative for waste utilization and offers business opportunities for the local community, its contribution to the artisans’s welfare remains relatively low. This is due to several factors, including limited access to technology, insufficient capital, and low productivity among the artisans themselves.
