Abstract

ABSCTRACT Agriculture is an important sector for Indonesia’s economy, especially horticultural commodities such as cayenne pepper, which has high economic value and is widely cultivated in Tamansari Village, Wuluhan District. Despite its potential to improve household welfare, cayenne pepper farmers still face challenges such as price fluctuations, pests, and limited capital. This study aims to analyze the role of cayenne pepper farmers in improving family welfare in Tamansari Village, Wuluhan District, Jember Regency. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The main informants were five cayenne pepper farmers who had at least two years of experience in cultivating the commodity. Data analysis was carried out using the SWOT method to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in cayenne pepper farming. The results of the study indicate that cayenne pepper cultivation makes a significant contribution to the income of farmer families, supported by fertile land conditions, hereditary farming experience, and the existence of active farmer groups. However, market price fluctuations, pest attacks, and limited capital and technology are the main obstacles. The recommended strategies include utilizing internal strengths to access wider market opportunities and increasing farmer capacity through training and institutional support. This study concludes that the development of targeted cayenne pepper cultivation can be an effective strategy to improve farmer welfare sustainably in rural areas.
