Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the application of mental accounting on the consumptive behavior and self-control of students receiving the KIP-K scholarship at the Institute of Technology and Science Mandala. The research method used is a qualitative approach with snowball sampling technique, involving 9 students from the Accounting Study Program as research subjects. Data collection methods include primary data through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of the study show that the majority of KIP-K scholarship recipients have applied mental accounting by categorizing their scholarship funds into several accounts, such as basic needs, academics, entertainment, emergency funds, and savings. However, in practice, of the nine participants, five exhibited consumptive behavior. Factors influencing consumptive behavior include social pressure, lifestyle, entertainment, and low self-control. Meanwhile, four participants demonstrated high self-control, as they were more prudent in managing their scholarship money, avoiding unnecessary purchases, and prioritizing essential needs. Thus, this shows that the pattern of mental accounting application carried out by KIP-K scholarship recipient students tends to form consumptive behavior rather than self-control behavior.
